We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer role to join our team. The Azure Monitor Observability team is responsible for the core telemetry infrastructure behind Azure Monitor and all Microsoft services.  Monitoring is at the heart of every online service, and this team is responsible for building a highly scalable and reliable world class observability solution for all Microsoft engineers and all Azure customers. Responsibilities

The Principal Software Engineer role is a technical role, requiring design and architecture of the Azure Monitor Agent for Linux. Azure Monitor Agent collects telemetry signals and covers a plethora of platforms – from running alongside customer’s compute workloads in the Azure cloud and on-premises to running on the dedicated hardware under Security Enhanced Linux OS. The collected logs, counters and traces are the essential input that feeds observability, security, and analytics solutions such as Azure Security and Infrastructure Insights for cloud services. The software must function reliably, efficiently, and securely across supported platforms, serving a variety of external and internal workloads.

This Principal Software Engineer will be a technical leader who has demonstrated quality and performance of the code they write and the manageability and extensibility of their solutions at cloud scale. There is an opportunity to provide technical mentoring & leadership to other team members, and to design & spearhead implementation of key upcoming initiatives in Azure Boost, or to develop support for new cloud infrastructure types.

Demonstrated experience with writing commercial platform software is very valuable. Cloud expertise is useful. The role will encompass ownership from design through implementation of core new areas of the codebase. There will be helpful team members to learn from, and ample opportunity to develop new skills and show impact and leadership.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years software design, architecture, testing & technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Rust or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 6+ years of software engineering experience in production quality software, with good track record.

Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in C++/Rust or other systems software languages.

  • Systems software (Operating systems, databases tools) experience on any platform.

  • Familiarity with monitoring and telemetry systems.

  • Team player with a collaborative spirit and readiness to work within and across teams, with good technical leadership.

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
